Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Treatment in McKinney

woman holding wrist while sitting at computerIf your hands go numb halfway through a workday or you find yourself dealing with pain and tingling after hours at the computer, carpal tunnel syndrome may be one possible cause. These symptoms can make typing, gripping and other everyday tasks more difficult.

At Craig Ranch Chiropractic, we evaluate hand and wrist symptoms to better understand what’s going on and determine whether chiropractic care may be appropriate.

When Nerve Pressure Turns Into Numbness

Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when the median nerve, which runs from the forearm into the hand, becomes compressed within the carpal tunnel at the wrist. This pressure can affect nerve function and lead to symptoms such as numbness, tingling, pain and, in some cases, weakness.

Symptoms may extend into the hand and arm and can become particularly noticeable during activities that involve frequent use of the hands.

Why Computer Work May Aggravate Wrist Symptoms

Many of the patients we see with carpal tunnel symptoms spend long hours working at a computer. Repetitive hand movements and keeping the wrist bent or angled for extended periods may place additional stress on the wrist or aggravate existing symptoms.

Factors may include:

  • Long hours typing or using a mouse
  • Keeping the wrist bent while working
  • Repetitive gripping or hand movements
  • Poor desk or keyboard ergonomics
  • Limited breaks from repetitive tasks
  • Inflammation or irritation around the wrist

When Symptoms Start Interfering With Your Day

Pain and numbness in the arms and hands can make a workday increasingly frustrating, especially when your job requires frequent computer use. Tingling, weakness or numbness may also make it harder to grip or hold everyday objects.

If these symptoms are persistent or interfering with your usual activities, an evaluation can help determine what may be behind them.

Starting With Nerve Testing

Dr. Allam begins by discussing your symptoms, including when they occur and which activities seem to aggravate them. Nerve testing is then used to assess nerve function and provide additional information about what may be happening.

Based on the findings, care may focus on addressing inflammation or other factors identified during the evaluation. You’ll also be shown ways to adjust your posture and workstation, along with stretches you can do on your own between visits.

Monitoring Changes in Numbness and Pain

Some patients under care may notice less numbness and pain as their symptoms change. Repeat nerve testing can be used to monitor progress and provide objective information about how nerve function is responding over time.

Your care can then be adjusted according to your findings, symptoms and individual response.

You Don’t Have to Ignore Ongoing Hand Numbness

Persistent pain, numbness or tingling doesn’t have to be something you simply work around. An evaluation can help clarify what’s happening and whether care may be appropriate, with the goal of reducing symptoms and improving hand and arm function when possible.
